Artificial Insemination in Rabbits
Artificial insemination (AI) in rabbits is a reproductive technique in which semen is collected from a male and manually introduced into the female’s reproductive tract. This method is widely used in commercial rabbit rabbit breeding programs to enhance herd productivity and genetic selection. It also supports disease control by minimizing direct physical contact between animals.
In large-scale operations, AI enables synchronized breeding, efficient record-keeping, and consistent production of meat or fur. Overall, AI enhances both economic efficiency and breeding management in commercial rabbit production.
LEPEX AND NOVUM.
In 2015, Dr Bart van den Berg (The Netherlands) developed the rabbit semen preservation medium LEPEX, which has been commercially available ever since. LEPEX is a leporine semen extender, supplied as a high quality micronized powder, for fresh use and cooled transport. It is specially formulated for the dilution of rabbit sperm and the storage of the diluted at 17°C.
Recently new insight into the biochemical mechanisms underlying rabbit reproduction, led to the development of a novel supplement named NOVUM. This micronized powder supplement, when added to the semen extender, offers groundbreaking approach supporting the induction of ovulation. The combination of NOVUM with the specially developed LEPEX extender is marketed as LEPEX-NOVUM.
Comprehensive commercial, technical and scientific information about these products and supplement can be found elsewhere on this website.
All products: LEPEX, NOVUM and LEPEX-NOVUM are produced by HuVeSearch bv (Belgium) and supplied as micronized powders. Dr Bart van den Berg continues to work as a consultant for HuVeSearch bv.
